Applications now being accepted for 2015 ElkhartWood Community Tree Planting Projects
August 26, 2015 @ 4:00 pm - September 21, 2015 @ 5:00 pm| Free
Applications are now being accepted for the October 2015 ElkhartWood Community Tree Planting Program. The program supports community tree planting projects in the Elkhart area on public and community spaces. Selected projects will receive up to 15 trees, technical assistance and education that includes proper planting and care of trees. Tree planting events will be scheduled during the month of October. Through a partnership with NIPSCO, the ElkhartWood program will be expanding in 2015 to include one community tree planting project on community owned space in addition to one project on public land. Tree planting projects submitted for community spaces (not government owned/supported) must be customers of NIPSCO electric or gas to qualify. Applications for projects on private property or for the benefit of a single individual are not eligible. ElkhartWood is an exciting, community-driven program that connects the Elkhart community to the city forest. The program is a partnership between the City of Elkhart Forestry Division, the Elkhart Environmental Center (EEC), and the ElkhartWood Products Network. Local woodworkers and sawyers make up the network and purchase high-quality logs from city trees and the sale of these logs supports community tree planting projects. The program began in the spring of 2014 and is already getting attention from across the state. In January the City of Elkhart received the 2015 Gold Leaf Beautification Award for the ElkhartWood program.
