On Air: Chuck Freeby
A member of the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame, WHME Sports Director Chuck Freeby knows the complete Michiana sports scene as well as anyone…mainly because he’s been a part of it all his life. Born in South Bend, he is a 1982 graduate of Elkhart Central High School. In 1986, he received a B.A. in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame.
These days, he is well known for his love of area high school sports. His passion showed for 17 years at WNDU-TV, where Chuck pioneered expanded high school television coverage with “Friday Night Flights” during football season and “Roundball Roundup” for basketball.
Now Chuck has served for 15 years as Sports Director at WHME-TV 46 where he calls play-by-play on the high school football and basketball “Game of the Week”, various college sports events, and co-hosts the “Morning Jumpstart” on Pulse FM. In 2017, Chuck was named Indiana’s Sportscaster of the Year by the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
For the last few years, Chuck has been doing double-duty, working his full-time job at WHME, and filling in part-time at WNDU.
Chuck also takes on the challenge of giving back to the community in the form of public service. He is a frequent guest speaker and emcee around town for a variety of charities, including Hannah’s House, Christ Child and Reins of Life. He has served for over 20 years as a board member for the Women’s Care Center. His work over the years has raised over ten million dollars for local charities, including over a million in 2018 alone.
He has served as a coach and umpire at Chet Waggoner Little League and in the Inter-City Catholic League. He is also active in his parish, serving as a lector and Eucharistic minister at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Chuck and his wife, Diane, have been married 28 years and are parents of six children: Peter (26), Christopher (25), Mary (23), Jeanie (21), Rosie (21) and T.J. (17). They live in South Bend, with their schnoodle, Skipper.
